The Virginia-DC chapter of HFMA is pleased to announce that we have awarded three scholarships to deserving students associated with our chapter.
Amanda Havalka from Riverside Health System has earned the Robert H. Thomas Scholarship to help her with earning her Bachelor’s degree from Ashford University. Amanda’s essay demonstrated her positive attitude and determination; as she has earned a place in the Honor’s program while working full time. Amanda plans to use her degree in management or logistics. The Robert H. Thomas Scholarship was established to provide encouragement, recognition and financial incentives for Chapter members to pursue appropriate continuing education.

Carley Prendergast, daughter of HFMA member Mary Prendergast, has earned the Jay C. Ellis Scholarship based upon her essay and her impressive commitment to volunteerism supporting organizations including the Red Cross and Girls Scouts. Carley considered schools far and wide; ultimately deciding that she most wanted to be in Virginia. She plans to study International Relations/Business at Virginia Tech.
Cody Volarich, son of HFMA member Joy Volarich, has earned the Jay C. Ellis Scholarship to assist with his tuition at Virginia Tech. Cody plans to study Business and gain skills to be a good leader both at work and in the community. Cody’s essay demonstrated both how he would benefit from the scholarship as well as a true understanding of why it was created.
